As we move into next week, and continue to work with Rabasa's idea "elsewheres" I want you to keep the following list of skills you will need in mind and at hand. Also, look back at the reading notes for Rabasa's essay and make a list of what comprises an elsewhere. If you did not pick up the doodles, I will place them outside my office door.
o Develop a basic grasp of numerous complex
knowledges simultaneously
o Accept that these worlds are not
alternatives but co-existing
o Develop the capacity to dwell in a number
of worlds
o Resist the urge to translate
o Resist the urge to reduce one world to
your own pre-existing concepts
o Suspend all questions that lead to
translation, duplication or reduction of worlds into your own language or
worldview
o Reside outside the binary of same and
other
o Accept that you may not be able to fully
explain or contain some, or all, of these worlds
o Dwell in these worlds without
contradiction
o Allow worlds to coexist as independent
worlds
o Do not attempt to subsume all worlds into
a single world
o Move beyond drawing comparisons
o Do not periodize (define or construct
temporal or developmental periods)
